San Diego, CA Beach Spa Vacation Destination

Hotel del Coronado has a history of providing guests with luxury at its best. It first opened on San Diego's shores in 1888 as the premier sand and sun destination on the West coast. With such a long tradition of quality, it's no wonder that the Del Coronado's Spa was a luxury seeker's dream when it opened years later. The newly renovated Spa at Hotel del Coronado puts its own seaside take on classic European treatments, wowing guests with its mastery of simple, timeless elements. It was recently named one of the top 20 spas in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine, an honor which surprised no one who had ever been there.

Location The Hotel del Coronado is located on the beautiful Coronado coastline of San Diego, California, where sunny skies, sandy beaches, and blue water meet. Although there are many hotels in the area, Del Coronado stands out for its exquisite service, world-class reputation, and iconic red-shingled roof. The hotel is made up of one huge main building and several smaller cabin-like structures.

San Diego makes an ideal vacation destination for travelers looking for fun in the sun and a wide range of sightseeing options. The city itself is very large and provides plenty of dining and entertainment options. And just a short drive away is Tijuana, Mexico for across-the-border tourism. Of course, at a hotel like the Del Coronado, you might never want to leave your immediate surroundings.

Services The Spa at the Del provides guests with a whole book filled with treatments from which to choose during their stay. Most services incorporate some element of the natural landscape just outside, using either sea shells, sand, ocean water, or seaweed. Of course, classic treatments are available as well, and these are always performed to very high standards. The Del Classic European Facial, for example, is a by-the-book spa treatment that couldn't be better.

While all services are offered a la carte, many of the most popular choices at the spa are combinations of shortened treatments. The Spa actually includes a "Journeys" segment to its menu that highlights different areas of the world according to spa treatment styles. For example, the South Pacific Journey includes a Rain Forest Wrap and a Lomi Lomi Massage for a tropical package deal.

Some treatments at the Del are targeted at teens, men, and couples, giving all members of the family a chance to get pampered. Teen packages cut down full-length services into 25-minute segments so pampering doesn't get boring. And treatments for men are specially formulated to improve a man's skin.

The Spa at the Del doesn't provide salon services on site, but it does refer guests to the fabulous salon next door for manicures, pedicures, waxing, makeup, cuts, and color treatments. The Yamaguchi Salon is also located in the Hotel del Coronado, and it's spearheaded by celebrity stylist Billy Yamaguchi, who founded the fung shui technique of esthetic hair care.

Amenities The Spa at the Del includes 21 treatment rooms, multiple hydrotherapy tubs, relaxation lounges for men and women, and steam rooms. There's also a private spa deck overlooking the ocean, which guests can use before or after their services. Also on the terrace is an exclusive infinity pool and fire pit for guests' enjoyment. Of course, beyond the spa, the Hotel del Coronado provides a slew of entertainment and dining options. And the beach itself is the best perk of all.

Specialties The Spa at the Del offers four signature treatments, two of which use seashells to smooth skin and ease tension. The Shell Coronado Massage heats shells and incorporates them into the treatment much like warmed stones. A similar setup happens in the Shell Coronado Facial; warmed shells are pressed on the face during part of the treatment, followed by cooled shells later on. The other two signature treatments, a body polish and a wrap, use sand and seaweed respectively to make classic services more localized. Any of the four signature treatments is a real treat worth experiencing.
